Sigiriya Rock shrouded in morning mist

Why you should climb Sigiriya at dawn

A small defence of getting up early — and four arguments against the midday crowd.

There are two kinds of tourists at Sigiriya Rock: those who stand at the gate at half past six, and those who give up halfway up at half past ten in full sun.

We recommend the first kind. Here’s why.

1. The silence

At 6 a.m. you hear only birds and your own breathing. By 9 the staircase fills with school groups, tour buses and WhatsApp calls. The rock changes mood with the volume.

2. The light

The frescoes — the famous Sigiriya Maidens — literally glow in the morning’s side-light. At noon the rays come down vertically and the colours flatten.

3. The view

From 200 m up you see the whole central plain wrapped in mist. Midday gives you reach, but no contrast.

4. Your knees

1,270 steps in 35 °C is no joke. In cool morning air the climb is almost a pleasure.

If early-rising is really not for you: Pidurangala is the rock formation opposite. Half the tourists, lower entry fee, and the view of Sigiriya itself is better. Happy to take you there instead.
