When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons — and that's the shortest answer that's also wrong. An honest seasons map.

One of the most common questions we get — and one too often answered with a quick “November to April”.
That’s true for the south and west coasts. It’s wrong for Trincomalee. And for the highlands it almost doesn’t matter.
Two monsoons, two worlds
The Yala monsoon hits the southwestern half of the island between May and September with heavy rain — mostly in the afternoons. Travel to Mirissa, Bentota or the highlands then and you’ll know the rhythm: sunny mornings, cloudy noons, evening thunderstorms, clear nights.
The Maha monsoon hits the northeastern half between October and January. Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Jaffna and Arugam Bay get their rains while the south stays dry and sunny.
Our honest seasons map
- Classic south/west loop (Colombo, Galle, Cultural Triangle, highlands): November to April.
- East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda): May to September.
- Highlands (Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Knuckles): doable year-round — summer brings rain but emptier trails and an intense green.
- Whale watching Mirissa: December to April.
- Yala safaris: February to September (Block 1 is often closed in October).
When your dates are fixed
Just send us your desired window — we’ll plan the route so you stay on the dry side. Even late July is a wonderful idea for Sri Lanka, if you know where to go.
